Description

The prophet Yeshayahu’s vivid and terrifying visions of destruction, and his magnificent words of comfort, have accompanied the Jews throughout their long and difficult exile.

Destruction and rebuilding, mourning and consolation: these are the immortal themes of Sefer Yeshayahu, the book of Isaiah. Small wonder, then, that Rabbi Shimon Schwab zt”l, the much beloved Rav of K’hal Adas Yeshurun and one of the foremost Torah scholars of his day, was able to delve so deeply into the prophet’s timeless words. As a refugee who barely escaped the fires of the Holocaust that decimated his Kehillah of Frankfurt-am-Main, and all of Eastern European Jewry, he experienced the destruction of one world; as the bearer of both the German-Jewish and the Lithuanian Yeshiva traditions, helping to rebuild both on new shores, he experienced at least a modicum of comfort.

In his unforgettable lectures on Sefer Yeshayahu to his congregation, Rav Schwab revealed the profound wisdom and beauty of the prophecies. In this important work, Rav Schwab’s eldest son, Rabbi Moshe Schwab, has adapted these lectures, making them accessible to all.

In Rav Schwab’s verse-by-verse explanations of the history of the time, Yeshayahu’s demands for social justice and repentance, his stern admonitions and his loving words of comfort grow clear to us, resonating in our own lives and concerns. In this commentary we see Rav Schwab’s brilliance, his deep understanding of Torah tradition, and his warm humanity, as he gives us a new insight into the immortal prophecies of Yeshayahu.

Just finished learning Sefer Yeshuyahu with this Sefer. What a great commentary. I am learning through Tanach and now trying to find a good commentary on Yirmiyahu and Trei Assar. Anyone have any suggestions?I have no way of contacting the author Rabbi Moshe Schwab, so I’ll leave a message here. Yasher Koach for this Sefer! Did Rabbi Shimon Schwab deliver Shiurium on the rest of Nach? If yes, can you or someone please consider publishing his lectures in book form on other sefarim of Tanach. There is really a lack of high quality sefarim on the rest of Tanach. Thank you!

I have just completed my reading of Rav Schwab on Yeshayahu. As a Christian believer I wanted to understand how Jewish scholars explain the messianic verses in the prophecies of Isaiah especially those referring to the suffering servant of God.In Isaiah 40, 42, 49, 50, 52 and 53, God’s servant and the suffering servant is usually ascribed to the Jewish people and sometimes to Isaiah himself. Christian writing focuses on Jesus of Nazareth as the suffering servant. It is clear that Isaiah’s prophecies have been fulfilled on different levels. He is sometimes speaking to the immediate situation but also to the coming Babylonian exile and to future exiles and the coming reign of the Messiah. Likewise, Isaiah portrays the suffering servant with the future persecutions of the Jews and in the life of the Messiah. In Is. 49:3 Israel is called God’s servant but in 49:5 it is God’s servant that is to gather Israel back to God. Therefore the prophecies of the servant are not always to be ascribed to Israel. For me, Isaiah 53 best describes Jesus of Nazareth. The Jewish people as God’s suffering servant fit only to a degree. For example, in verse 9 where the servant did no violence and had no deceit (ascribed as without sin in many commentaries) must refer to the Messiah and not to Israel. All in all, Rav Schwab on Yeshayahu was fascinating reading for a Christian. The text was challenging because it was sprinkled with Hebrew words which allowed me to expand my tiny Hebrew vocabulary.

Got this commentary as soon as it came out. As with all Artscroll books, the introduction is absolutely terrific in nailing down the main points/ themes of the commentary. I am only up to chapter 5 presently, there is so much material to learn and internalize. If you have a solid background in Torah study and the basic theological teachings of Torah Judaism you are in for a real treat. Issues of chronology/ context are dealt with which helps to eliminate any false ideas about Isaiah. I am looking forward to finishing the commentary and going through over and over again. Enjoy!!
