doneliyahu –
Rabbi Alexander Seinfeld and medical Doctor Daniel Grove produced and published a well-written, exhaustively researched, entertaining tome for maintaining a healthy lifestyle according to accepted medical practices combined with their combined interpretation of Torah wisdom on the subject of keeping one’s body, mind, spirit, and soul healthy. A tall order to which they offer towards practice and realization.“Body and Soul” has the scholastic rigor of an academic text yet reads more like what one might expect if the family’s general practitioner and friendly forward-thinking rabbi were available in the neighborhood, ready to offer old-school caring, gentle and firm guidance, and modern medical and healing knowledge.Unlike many Torah-influenced texts or health-based publications, this is not a yawn-fest but is a very interesting, at many places fun, reading. You open it to read about some small topic, you keep reading about another smaller topic. After a few hours you find your fingers have gone through many of the nearly 400 pages of straight text, intermingled with fascinating graphic charts – including the data to start your own calorie tracking. Add more pages for the exhaustive rear-placed reference notes and an exhaustive index. A beautifully well-printed hefty tome perfect for the subject, should wear well for the frequency it would be referred once it is in your possession.I have a tendency to use suprarational tools when i engage Rabbi Seinfeld because he is a modern Torah sage, in my opinion. And a polymath, so he might introduce a topic not usually on the calendar of a shul talk. So again in “Body and Soul.”I think it is one of those books one would be wise enough to acquire with the intent of keeping it in the easy access of one’s library. But make sure you read and study it for your applications for the benefit of your body and your soul.A great necessary book.

This book is excellent; a must-have for every Jewish home. It combines an in-depth philosophical discussion of the role of health and nutrition in Judaism together with practical tips and and practices to incorporate into daily life. I devoured (pun intended) half the book in one Shabbos, and have already started implementing some of its suggestions. Highly recommend.

I am about 1.5 times through the sefer. It is very well done and motivational.I was up to the perek of Mesillas Yesharim about perishus and eating when I got this sefer. It connects well with what the Ramchal writes there.

I bought Rabbi Seinfeld’s book for my teenage daughters birthday. Within a day she began reading it and hasn’t put it down since.

This book motivated me in my efforts to do more exercise and eat a more healthy diet. I also found the calorie lists interesting because they included foods from “real life”; it was surprising to see how many calories there are in certain foods that we all eat so often. The book takes into account very carefully the Jewish lifecycle and calendar and the food “challenges” that arise from them. This is unique and I appreciate that.
